March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

I recently attended a medical symposium for the Colorectal Cancer awareness month in the Philippines held at the Augusto Barcelon auditorium of The Medical City (TMC) in Ortigas, Pasig City.

I was saddened by the fact that according to the newest medical bulletin,  Colon Cancer overtook Liver Cancer as the Top three (3) most common cancer in the Philippines.

Still number one (1) is Breast Cancer followed by Lung Cancer in number two(2).  While Cervical Cancer is number five (5).

The symposium was hosted by Dr. Jun Ruiz, a gastroenterologist and one of the specialists from the TMC Colorectal Clinic.

TMC Doctors and Dr. Eric Tayag in a dance number
Department of Health Assistant Secretary Dr. Enrique Tayag was the event's guest of honor.  Entitled "Advances in the Screening and Management of Colorectal Cancer".

The event was organized by the TMC Cancer Center, the Colorectal Clinic, and the Center for Patient Partnership.

Other speakers during the event includes the following:

Dr. John Geoffrey G. Palisoc, TMC gastroenterologist

TMC oncologist Dr. Beatrice J. Tiangco

Dr. Manuel Francisco T. Roxas, chairman of the Department of Surgery and consultant-director of the Colorectal Clinic.

Topics that were discussed in the said symposium includes the following:
  • Updates in Diagnosis and Screening of Colorectal Cancer
  • Recent Technological Advances in Colorectal Surgery
  • Hitting the Target in Colorectal Cancer Treatment.

"The world celebrates Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month this month of March," said Dr. Jun Ruiz during the interview with bloggers.

"This symposium is part of an awareness campaign to promote colorectal cancer screening which is the third most common cancer among Filipinos," quips Dr. Jun Ruiz

"The Colorectal Clinic at The Medical City aims to be at the forefront of the Filipinos' battle against colorectal cancer. Our message is that cancer screening can save lives. This strategy has been shown to reduce colorectal cancer risk by as high as 70 percent," adds Dr. Ruiz.

He also revealed that there are 1,400,000 colon cancer cases in the world and 700,000 will die in the same year. In the Philippines, there are 8,563 cases and 4,130 deaths (data from 2012) He recommends for Filipinos to undergo Colonoscopy every 5 to 10 years, depending on risk factors and should be properly guided by a licensed medical doctor at a reputable health institution like the Medical City.

There are various causes of Colon Cancer.  One is genetics.  Another is unhealthy lifestyle. Other factors such as obesity,
alcohol abuse, too much smoking and others.  Those people from age. 50 yrs old and above have higher risks. Gender wise, more men are prone to colon cancer than women.

My fellow blogger, JL and I also visited the giant colon balloon which was on display at the The Medical City Ortigas foyer.  So, together with other TMC visitors we had a glimpse of what our colon looks like, yes, it was very educational!  I actually learned the different kind of polyps that affects the colon.  You should visit and experience this too.
